ACT 1: ORIGINS IN RUINS
1945 - Budapest, Hungary
Ernő Goldstein, a gifted Jewish architect, survives WWII and the horrors of a concentration camp. Scarred but determined, he flees to America with nothing but his sketches and an obsession with order, strength, and permanence—values he sees reflected in the emerging Brutalist movement.
Arriving in New York City, Ernő works odd jobs and eventually catches the eye of a progressive real estate developer, Eleanor Stone, who believes in his talent. She gives him a chance to design a public housing project—Ernő’s first opportunity to bring his vision to life.
